I have always wanted to write and as a school student wrote poem after poem. But it was whilst doing an Open University degree between 2006 and 2012 that I saw my future as a writer.
I had by this time written my first play, Cinders in 2002 and then followed it up with another, At Six Months, in 2005. But it was the Open that encouraged me to write. Whilst studying there, I wrote a screenplay (highly commended) and a stageplay, Doria, that I think of as one of my best. It has never been performed, but there again finding an actor who was a good pianist and who bares a resemblance to the Italian opera composer, Giacomo Puccini was always going to be a challenge! The short stories followed as a contribution (courtesy of my youngest son) to raising cash for local charities and the poems as an invitation to contribute to anthologies about my home city. I do have a number of other poems published on an old Blog site and one day I will refine these for proper publication, or perhaps alternatively I will just write some better ones. Since retirement in the Spring of 2019, I have titled myself a professional writer and that's how I intend from now on to earn my keep. |
